When Maywood Park closed in 2015, Mayor Ronald Serpico’s Administration made annexing the 55-acre shuttered racetrack a top priority. After months of planning, the Melrose Park Village Board, on December 10, 2018, passed an annexation agreement. Demolition of the track’s abandoned structures and cleanup of the site will begin in the next few weeks.
What Annexation Means for Melrose Park
► Most importantly, the Village of Melrose Park, not the Cook County Board, will control the future development of the site.
► The development will generate tax revenue that will enable Melrose Park to continue providing residents one of the lowest village property tax rates in the area.
► The project will create around 400 construction jobs and once completed, as many as 700 permanent jobs.
► The three industrial buildings will be finished in late summer/early fall of 2019 and the retail section along North Avenue, will be concluded in the summer of 2020.
Tenants of the buildings will be announced at a future date when contracts are finalized.
