Melrose Park Minimum Wage and Sick Leave Ordinances

The Melrose Park Village Board voted to opt out of two Cook County Board ordinances mandating private sector employers to increase the minimum wage and to provide sick leave benefits. 

The Village’s actions were predicated on the fact that 3/4 of Cook County towns opted out of enacting these two ordinances. The Mayor and Board felt our local employers, who help keep our real estate taxes in check, would be at a severe disadvantage competing against neighboring Cook County and DuPage County towns who would be offering the same products and services at a reduced cost due to lower overhead costs. As our economy slowly recovers the Mayor and Board hope that employers voluntarily seek ways to increase employee wages and benefits.
